PENNYMAN, SIR WILLIAM, BART., eldest son of William Pennyman, St. Albans, Herts., one of the Six Clerks in Chancery and Joint Comptroller and Clerk of the Hanaper, and Anne, dau. of Robert Aske, Aughton, Yorks.; b.; at school under Wilson and Osbaldeston (Camden, Insignia, 1624); Christ Church, Oxford, matr. 31 Oct 1623, aged 16; adm. Inner Temple 29 Jun 1623; created baronet 22 Aug 1628; High Sheriff, Yorkshire 1635-6; Custos Rotulorum, Yorkshire North Riding (occurs as such Apr 1637); adm. Gray’s Inn and called to Bench there 6 Feb 1638/9; MP Richmond (Yorkshire) Apr-May 1640, Nov 1640 – 11 Aug 1642, when disabled from sitting as a Royalist supporter; commanded regiment of Yorkshire Trained Bands in first Scottish War; one of witnesses at Strafford’s trial and voted against Bill of Attainder; raised a troop of horse and some 600 foot for Charles I, whom he joined at Nottingham Aug 1642; fought at battle of Edgehill; Governor of Oxford from Apr 1643; m. Anne, dau. of William Atherton, Skelton, Yorks.; d. 22 Aug 1643. Buried Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. DNB.
