PETTY, JOHN, 1ST EARL OF SHELBURNE (I), fifth son of Thomas Fitzmaurice, 1st Earl of Kerry (I), and Anne, only dau. of Sir William Petty MD MP FRS, Romsey, Hampshire; b.; adm. (aged 9) May 1715; in under school list 1719; adm. Middle Temple 3 Jan 1727/8; High Sheriff, co. Kerry 1732-3; MP (I) Co. Kerry 1743 – 7 Oct 1751; assumed surname of Petty in lieu of Fitzmaurice 1751, having inherited the estates of his maternal uncle Henry Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne (I) (of an earlier creation); created Viscount Fitzmaurice (I) 7 Oct 1751 and Earl of Shelburne (I) 6 Jun 1753; Governor, co. Kerry 1753; Privy Councillor (I) 8 Feb 1754; MP Chipping Wycombe 1754 – 20 May 1760; created Baron Wycombe (GB) 20 May 1760; m. 16 Feb 1734 his cousin Mary, younger dau. of Hon. William Fitzmaurice, Gallane, co. Kerry; d. 14 May 1761.
