        PINCKNEY, THOMAS, brother of Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (qv); b. 23 Oct 1750; in school lists 1764-7; Head Town Boy; Christ Church, Oxford, matr. 23 Nov 1768; Military Academy, Caen, France; adm. Middle Temple 16 Dec 1768, called to bar 25 Nov 1774; returned to Carolina 1775 and commenced practise at bar there; Capt., 1st Regt. Carolina troops in revolutionary army on outbreak of rebellion; escaped from Charleston before its surrender; wounded and taken prisoner at battle of Camden, where he acted as ADC to Gen. Gates; US Minister to England 1792; negotiated Treaty of San Ildefonso with Spain 1794; returned to USA 1796; one of American Commissioners who signed the abortive Treaty of London 31 Dec 1806; Major-Gen. commanding Southern Division 1812; took part in campaign against the Creeks, whom he defeated at Horse Shoe Bend; twice elected to Congress as Federalist; Governor of South Carolina; m. 1st, 22 Jul 1779 Elizabeth, dau. of Jacob Motte, Public Treasurer of South Carolina; m. 2nd, 19 Oct 1797 Frances, widow of John Middleton (qv), and sister of his first wife; d. 2 Nov 1828.
