        POTTS, LAURENCE HOLKER, son of Cuthbert Potts, Pall Mall, London, surgeon, and Ethelinda Margaretta, dau. of John Thorpe FSA, Rochester, Kent, antiquary; b. 18 Apr 1789; in school list 1801; left Christmas 1803; St. George’s Hospital 1810; MRCS 1812; MD Aberdeen 1825; practised at Truro, Cornwall; Superintendent and Physician, County Lunatic Asylum, Bodmin, Cornwall 1828-37; established an institution for treating spinal diseases at Blackheath, Kent 1837; an inventor; took out a patent for sinking foundations under water by creating a partial vacuum 1843, which, although not a financial success for him, incidentally gave rise to the system of sinking foundations by compressed air; m. 1 Aug 1820 Anne, dau. of John Wright, Lower Redbrooke, Gloucs.; d. 23 Mar 1850.
