Cambridge 1713, adm. pens. 4 Jun 1713, scholar 9 Apr 1714, but did not matr.; Lord Bolingbroke, in a letter of 4 Jul 1713 to Matthew Prior (qv), relates his endeavours to obtain the election of this “very pretty lad, who wears your name” to Christ Church, Oxford, and how he was defeated by Bentley, who “leaped over eight boys to make this youth his first option”; in thanking Bolingbroke for his care of “my friend Prior”, Matthew expresses his surprise at his correspondent knowing of “that smudging boy, for his mother is very homely” (Monk, Life of Richard Bentley, i, 353-6); edited Lusus Westmonasterienses, sive Epigrammatum et Poematum Minorum Delectus, 1730, the first printed collection of Latin compositions recited at the annual Westminster anniversaries.
