Constable is recorded as having painted two portraits of John Wingfield. One was bought by the eventual Director of B.F.A. in Massachusetts, current whereabouts unknown; photographs and correspondence concerning this painting is in the Master Paintings Catalogue and the School Archive. It is recorded in 'Portraits of Head Masters' that the date 1818 was discerned during cleaning in 1899. Mentioned in 'L'Opera Completa di Constable' Robert Hoozee, 1979 (p.110). Engraved by W.J.Ward, published in 1827.

Half-length portrait of Wingfield, wearing academic dress and collar; he also wears a fine wig. Bears signature c.l.: John Constable/Pinx. 1818 and later inscribed upper left with the identity of the sitter.
