Possibly commissioned by the sitters daughters, and remained by family decent in the Burdett-Coutts collection, placed on permanent loan to the School in c. 1946 by W.A. Burdett-Coutts. There is a half-length version by Shee in the National Portrait Gallery similar to this, although the hands are differently arranged. Three-quarters length portrait of Burdett standing, wearing a black tail coat and trousers with his head inclined a little to the right; his right hand holds a roll of paper in a vertical position; his left hand is outstretched and touches a piece of paper upon table in the bottom-right of the picture; the background consists of a curtain behind Burdett and to the right a wall with pilaster.
