Painted for Henry George Liddell, passed on to his son, Sir Frederick Francis Liddell (1865-1950) and presented by his grandson Maurice Arthur Liddell (1905-1976) to the School in 1950, through the influence of Sir Henry Hake O.W., Director of the National Portrait Gallery. An identical picture was presented to the Oxford University Museum, now the Ashmolean, to celebrate Liddell
