PE has promised an Annotation on each of Porson's plays - could PE instead insert in the 6th No. of Mus.Crit. that on the Hecuba? If so, JHM will propose the play as one of the subjects for next October for his 'young men.' Many members of university absent (see next letter).Also seeks a book review of anything.

Wrong number of offprints of PE's Medea article. A term lost because of fears of fever. Dobree returned from two months in Leyden with Wyttenbach (who is in despair after losing his papers). Schaefer's pirated edition of Adversaria. What of annotations on the Hecuba? JHM wants them to have a position of honour in Mus.Crit.No.6. Asks PE to promote the application of John Brass to Leeds Grammar School (he didn't get it). Asks PE to write a review of the Adversaria for the Classical Quarterly - PE apparently has an objection.

Thanks PE for suggestions for 2nd ed. of Hipp. Ed. of Photius from Porson's copy. Sale price of Porson's Adversaria. Pseudonymous article in Gentleman's Magazine by E H Barker - much abuse of same (plus mention of Valpy and Stephanus). Brevity of reviews in Museum Criticum. May turn to the Alcestis.

PE has agreed to support John Brass - JHM drafts letter for him to send. Illegally sending PE a (Porson?) book - asks him to destroy this letter! Asks for whatever PE has on the Hecuba - but for PE's promise, Medea rather than Hecuba would have been set for next term.

Returning to the new year - Alcestis, Mus.Crit. and lectures. Mus.Crit.No.6 will begin with PE on Hecuba - wants the Germans and his pupils to benefit as soon as possible.

Lobec better than Erfurdt on Ajax. Forwards a letter (?) from Pe to Blomfield. Much more on Barker. Small sale of PE's Acharnians. Buying habits of undergraduates. Publication of Porson's notes (JHM to edit prose authors, Dobree verse). 1st no. of Museum Criticum delayed until the end of March (plus discussion of name - maybe Museum Criticum, maybe Cambridge Classical Researches).

Warm praise of Heraclidae (1st 7 sheets thereof) - compared to Porson's Hecuba. Porson's books (inc. Brubach, with Milton's notes) purchased by the college (Trinity?) and in JHM's rooms. PE to come to Cambridge and meet JHM for the 1st time. Classical Journal - Valpy has little judgement - Dobree and Tate condemn it - dubious allies, inc. Barker and Parr. Expects the Museum Criticum to make a loss for the 1st year or so. (though Murray will pay all the expenses). JHM will notice PE's Sophocles in the Edinburgh Review, and Blomfield will notice his OT in the Museum Criticum.

Toothache. Has collated for PE Brubach's Sophocles with the Aldine (some particular but unspecified lines). Porson's books a boon. Barker again.

Busy - lectures, pupils, wide acquaintance, medal and scholarship exams, publishing two books (2nd ed Hippolytus, 1st number of Museum Criticum). Asks for two new sheets of the Heracleidae. Articles in Mus Crit longer than expected and without much variety, so may not at first be popular. Asks for a short notice of any new publication PE sees, and for his views on the Mus Crit when it appears.

Still very busy - simultaneous publication of two books. Thanks PE for complete copy of Heracleidae. Mus Crit longer than expected (140)(128 pages). Hippolytus will be finished the next day, and a copy will be sent to PE. Sidler's Dochmiaea unsatisfactory - hopes for a better attempt from PE. More on Barker - an 'unprincipled dog.' PE has deferred coming to Cambridge.
