Extracts Concerning Grant's House

The extracts in this book were taken from the Town Boy Ledger which was kept by the Senior Town Boy. It was compiled by Lawrence Tanner (G 1905 - 1909) and contains details of the history of Grant's House and notes on events between 1821 -1862. There are notes on sporting events, pupils, rules and the number of pupils within the school. Also included at the end is a list of the Heads of House from 1803-1889.

A List of Known Grantites

These lists were created by Lawrence Tanner (G 1905 - 1909) and are a list of pupils at Grant's House in the years 1745-1876.\r\nThe information on the first few pages is taken from Dr Smith's (Head Master) papers, including his cash book, and gives the names of Grantites, the month they entered the House and their age from 1745-1752. The records of 1775 onwards note payments of teachers for private tuition and boarding house usher. \r\n\r\nOther notes are copied from Lord John Russell's (G 1803 - c.1809) School Lists from October 1803 published in G.F.R. Barker's 'Index of Additional Names 1789-1805'. They list the names of boys within Grant's House and their form.\r\n\r\nThere is also a list of Grant's boys taken from school registers beginning in 1815. From 1876 the list was compiled from Dr Rutherford's (Head Master) 'Entrance Book'. It lists the names of the boys and the date at which they entered Grant's House. Some notes give the ages of the boys, which form they were in, when they left and indicate if they were day pupils or boarders.

Grant's House Ledger 1916-1931

This ledger, kept by the Head of House, contains details of events the Head of House thought interesting and worth recording in the 'House Notes' and 'House Chronicle', as well as details of tannings and punishments. There are summaries of each term and year. Details of the literary society are also recorded including plays performed and the names of boys who performed each part. A list of the previous Heads of Grant's House and a list of the rules and customs of the House is also recorded. Early entries often refer to the war and air raids in London, and at the end of the volume is a list of Grantite cricket pinks and a list of all the plays read by the Literary Society.\r\n\r\nA note at the start states that a new ledger has been started titled 'The Athletic Ledger' for details regarding sports which are not recorded in detail in this ledger. There are also two inserts inside the front cover one titled 'The Rules of the Knelige', the other titled 'Westminster School Pocket Rules'.

Grant's House Athletic Ledger

The ledger was begun by M. G. Hewins (G 1911 - c.1916) and contains accounts and results of senior and junior sporting events within the house; including racquets, gym, swimming and rowing, as well as inter-house competitions. It also includes a list of colours at the end of each season and criticisms of the players. At the beginning of the volume are lists of team members who are in the photographs of the football and cricket senior teams from previous years.
