Part of Westminster School's Archive and Collections

Letter from C.G. Rich, 30th October 1955. Headmaster The Cathedral School Bristol. Thanks for giving an address at their prize-giving. A satisfactory inspection - but it was scathing about the school buildings. Has been told that Harold Costley White received assistance from the Dulverton Trust at Gloucester and details to the Bristol Dean.

Letter from Charles M. Gere, 21st November 1943. Thanks Harold Costley White for passing on Philby's opinions on the future of Palestine (presumably Kim, who was at Westminster under Harold Costley White) - some discussion of the issues. Possibility of hanging a photograph of the Doom painting, or a photograph of an engraving of it (see previous letters from Gere).

Letter from Charles M. Gere, 8th March 1944. Presumably the artist has heard from Harold Costley White that a Doom painting, sent to London for safekeeping, has been destroyed by bombing - but at least the painting was in a ruinous state, so it is not quite like losing a masterpiece. Looks forward to seeing him at the committee of the CPRE.

Letter from Charles M. Gere, 2nd April 1942. Harold Costley White's scheme for the Crypt has great possibilities, but their full development requires an architect of special imaginative power - discusses some possible names. About to begin hanging the Academy. (see previous letters from Gere).

Letter from Charles Smyth
GB 2014 WS-05-COS-01-185 · Item · 22/02/1952
Part of Westminster School's Archive and Collections

Letter from Charles Smyth, 22nd February 1952. Rector of St. Margaret's, Canon of Westminster. Has got someone to do Evensong, and so can assist Harold Costley White at a wedding (presumably in St. Margaret's, since he invites the CWs to lunch in the Rectory before the service). Will Harold Costley White ensure that his address is audible - otherwise people will fidget and whisper. Hears that Hope Costley White is working on another little book on Gloucestershire history (see Previous letters).

Letter from Charles Smyth, 22nd March 1952. Rector of St. Margaret's, Canon of Westminster. Everyone v disappointed that Harold Costley White was not well enough to officiate ), but the wedding seemed to go well. Is sure that if Harold Costley White were still Head Master relations between Chapter and School would be better, and that conditions in Dean's Yard would be more tolerable; with the Under School playground beneath his study window, he wonders for how much longer he can stand the strain. (see previous letters).
