        DOUGLAS, ARCHIBALD JAMES EDWARD, 1ST BARON DOUGLAS, son of Col. Sir John Stewart, Bart., of Grandtully, and his second wife Lady Jane Douglas, dau. of James Douglas, 2nd Marquis of Douglas (S), and sister of Archibald Douglas, 1st Duke of Douglas (S); b. 10 Jul 1748; previously at Rugby Sch., adm. 1759; at Westminster School 1761-5 (in school list Jun 1764); served heir of entail and provision to the Duke of Douglas 9 Sep 1761, when he assumed the surname of Douglas in lieu of Stewart; his right to the Douglas estates was disputed by the Duke of Hamilton, the heir male of the family, on the ground that he was a suppositious child of Lady Jane; the estates were confirmed to him by the House of Lords 27 Feb 1769, reversing an earlier decision by the Court of Session; MP Forfarshire 11 Feb 1782-90; created Baron Douglas (GB) 8 Jul 1790; Lord Lieut. Forfarshire from 6 May 1794; m. 1st, 13 Jun 1771 Lady Lucy Graham, dau. of William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose; m. 2nd, 13 May 1783 Lady Frances Scott, dau. of Francis Scott, Earl of Dalkeith (qv); d. 26 Dec 1827.
