DARBY, JOHN NELSON, brother of Jonathan Darby (qv); b. 18 Nov 1800; adm. 17 Feb 1812; Trinity Coll. Dublin, adm. fellow commoner 3 Jul 1815; Gold Medallist and BA 1819; adm. King’s Inns, Dublin 1815, called to Irish bar 1822; also adm. Lincoln’s Inn 9 Nov 1819; ordained deacon 1825, priest Feb 1826 (both Dublin); Curate, Calary, co. Wicklow 1826-7, resigning to join the religious sect which became known as the Plymouth Brethren; worked for the Brethren for several years in Switzerland and France; founded sect of Darbyites Dec 1845; visited many countries for purpose of propagating his doctrines; author numerous controversial and devotional works, a portion of which were edited by W. Kelly as Collected Writings, 33 vols., 1867-83; d. unm. 29 Apr 1882. DNB.
