Presumably painted for the school, where it is recorded in 1893. It was painted in 1799, and Markham's granddaughter, Lady Elizabeth Murray made a copy which was originally at the family home at Bacaa. Portraits of Markham in Hall and Common Room at Christ Church. The school attibutes this painting to John Hoppner
In 'Westminster School. Past and Present', Frederic Forshall writes of a portrait by Reynolds in the Hall at Christ Church and describes it thus ' ... three-quarter length, standing in his episcopal robes'. Forshall goes on to mention ' ... another [ version, sic] in the common room, as Master of Westminster'.

Markham is seated, holding a stick in his left hand, facing half to the left, wearing a white wig; a red curtain is draped behind him. Inscribed with: 'Wm Markham D.D. 1753-64'.
