Archival history

Possibly commissioned by the sitters daughters, and remained by family decent in the Burdett-Coutts collection, placed on permanent loan to the School in c. 1946 by W.A. Burdett-Coutts. There is a half-length version by Shee in the National Portrait Gallery similar to this, although the hands are differently arranged. Exhibited at the Royal Academy (1838) and at The Guelph Exhibition (1891). Mentioned in

Three-quarters length portrait of Burdett standing, wearing a black tail coat and trousers with his head inclined a little to the right; his right hand holds a roll of paper in a vertical position; his left hand is outstretched and touches a piece of paper upon table in the bottom-right of the picture; the background consists of a curtain behind Burdett and to the right a wall with pilaster.
