Archival history
By descent through the Phillimore family to Arthur Phillimore, whose daughter-in-law, Mrs John Phillimore presented it to the School in 1963. As regards the sitter, we can disregard later generations of the family at the time on grounds of style, and the hat shows that he was a Town Boy, which suggests that the sitter is most likely to have been Joseph Phillimore (1750-1831) or William Phillimore (1748-1818). Genealogy of the Family of Phillimore (1922) makes reference to a 'portrait in oils of William Phillimore' at Kendalls estate (p. 209) which might be a reference to this painting.

Scope and content
Full-length portrait of Phillimore standing; he wears smart dark green clothes with white cravat and stockings and carries a hat, not a mortar-board; he wears black buckled shoes and his right hand is tucked inside the lapel of his coat; he appears to be aged about 15; in the background is a dark wall behind Phillimore, and a patch of landscape to the right.
